I don't understand this at all, yes he's supposed to have a sword! A big saber that could chop an ox in half lengthwise! With a cultivator on the other end of it that looks like he does that every morning as part of his breakfast. I'd say you were lied to, but this would be a weird time for Lan Zhan to start playing pranks, and not a very good prank either. Maybe it was an evil disguise, and you saw through it.
